Halloween Films: Nerin’s Picks
Boo!
Tis that season again, the time when all manner of beasties and beings wander in the night.
I remember when Irish T.V put in a great effort for Halloween. Unfortunately that has declined over the last few years.
Recently, you’d be lucky if they had a classic spooky movie on RTE at 3am or if TV3 had a cheap, lame slasher on midweek.
Luckily, most of us aren’t slaves to the telly anymore, we can get DVDs pretty cheap or rent.
So here are a few of my personal picks for the Halloween season.
Kid Friendly
Lets face it, the holiday has become more about kids in the last century than anyone else.
Yes there was a bit of a revival in adults interest in Halloween, but before you go out in your vampiress corset or Elvis outfit, pop on one of these for the kids.
Hocus Pocus:
1993. Wow how time flies. The film has aged really well.
This film is one of my all time favourites for the Halloween season.
This has something everyone in the family will like.
The plot is basically how the 3 witches are brought back to life after a few hundred years and are trying to catch the kids to stay young.
The hero hates Halloween and is that stereotypical nineties moody teen. There’s the cute smart rich girl for him to fall for. There’s the unbelieving parents. There’s local bumbling bullies. And they’ve possibly the most awesome cat ever!
There are jokes for older viewers too, so you won’t be bored to death watching it with the younglings.
Bette Midler said this was her favourite of all her movies.
The perfect pick, number 1!
Honorable Mentions:
Teens
The Craft
Its cool, sexy and a little bit creepy.
The craft tells the story of a new girl at school that gets in with the freaky gothish girls and begins practicing witchcraft.
The head of their clique soon gets a little unhinged from all the power.
Its a safe, more adult like film that teens should love.
Honorable Mentions:
The Older Crowd
Night of the Living Dead
George A. Romero’s masterpiece still scares us silly to this day.
If you want a classic, creepy and downright scary film for the collection on Halloween, this should be part of it!
A group of people try to hold up in an abandoned farm house as the dead walk the Earth hunting for human flesh.
Honorable Mentions:
I love a good spook.
